Alaska
Alaska contractors are licensed by the Alaska DCBPL — Electrical & Mechanical Administrators Programs. Use the classification list below. Some states fold business questions into the trade exam. We do not sell a standalone Law & Business paper for Alaska.
Confirm question count, time, open-book rules, and passing score on the live board bulletin before you sit. We do not publish a single Q-count for every classification on this page, and we do not guarantee a passing result.
Getting an Alaska electrical or mechanical administrator license? Contractor Pathway offers original, exam-focused study guides and four full-length practice exams for the Alaska classifications we currently cover — the Unlimited Commercial Wiring, Residential Wiring, Controls and Control Wiring, and Inside Communications categories of the Electrical Administrator program, and the Unlimited Commercial and Industrial Plumbing category of the Mechanical Administrator program. Study with 30-, 60-, or 90-day access at $99, $129, and $169.
How Alaska is different from most states
Alaska does not run a single, CSLB-style general contractor licensing exam. General contractor registration under AS 08.18 does not itself require passing an exam. Instead, Alaska licenses individual electrical administrators under AS 08.40 (12 AAC 32) and, separately, mechanical administrators under a parallel program (AS 08.40, 12 AAC 39) — the person a registered contractor designates as responsible for its electrical or mechanical work must hold the matching license, and it is that person’s exam that this catalog covers.

|---|---|---|
| Electrical (Unlimited Commercial Wiring) | Alaska DCBPL Electrical Administrators, AS 08.40 / 12 AAC 32 | PSI: 100 questions, 4 hours, 70%, open book (bulletin 2911) |
| Electrical (Residential Wiring) | Alaska DCBPL Electrical Administrators, AS 08.40 / 12 AAC 32 | PSI: 75 questions, 3 hours, 70%, open book |
| Electrical (Controls and Control Wiring) | Alaska DCBPL Electrical Administrators, AS 08.40 / 12 AAC 32 | PSI: 50 questions, 2 hours, 70%, open book |
| Electrical (Inside Communications) | Alaska DCBPL Electrical Administrators, AS 08.40 / 12 AAC 32 | PSI: 50 questions, 2 hours, 70%, open book |
| Plumbing/Mechanical (Unlimited Commercial and Industrial Plumbing) | DCBPL Mechanical Administrators, AS 08.40 / 12 AAC 39 | PSI: 100 questions, 4 hours, 70%, open book |
DCBPL also licenses electrical administrators in two other categories — Outside Communications and Unlimited Linework Outside — and mechanical administrators in six other categories — Heating/Cooling/Process Piping, Unlimited HVAC/Sheet Metal, Unlimited Refrigeration, Mechanical Systems Temperature Control, Residential Plumbing and Hydronic Heating, and Residential HVAC. We have not yet built exam prep for those categories; this page will be updated as coverage expands. Always confirm current requirements, fees, and the passing score with DCBPL and PSI before you schedule. Contractor Pathway is an independent exam-prep provider and is not affiliated with DCBPL or PSI.
How administrator licensing works in Alaska
- Pass the PSI exam for your category. Both exams covered here are open-book, delivered by PSI Services, LLC, with a 70% passing score. Your score is valid for 12 months for licensing purposes.
- Apply to DCBPL. Electrical: submit form #08-4898 with a $150 application fee and $170 license fee ($320 total). Mechanical: submit form #08-4903 with a $150 application fee and $200 license fee ($350 total). Both require official transcripts if you’re qualifying partly through education.
- Get assigned to a registered contractor. An administrator may be assigned to only one registered contractor at a time, and must notify DCBPL within 15 days of any change in employer.
- Renew every two years. Licenses expire December 31 of odd-numbered years, regardless of issue date.
