How to get licensed in Arizona
Arizona licenses contractors through the Registrar of Contractors (ROC). The qualifications are set in statute at A.R.S. § 32-1122, quoted below, rather than left to policy.
- Four years of experience, two of them recent. The statute requires “a minimum of four years’ practical or management trade experience, at least two of which must have been within the last ten years.” The Registrar may reduce the four-year requirement where custom and usage in a particular craft show it to be excessive.
- Sit the exam within two years of applying. A.R.S. § 32-1122 requires qualification shown “by written examination taken not more than two years before application.” A stale exam score does not carry forward indefinitely.
- Know what the exam covers. The qualifying party must demonstrate knowledge of building safety, health and lien laws, administrative principles of contracting, construction plans and specifications, and the related trades — not trade skill alone.
- The exam can be waived. The Registrar may waive the written examination where records show the qualifying party previously held the same licence classification within the last five years.
- File the bond for your classification. A contractor’s bond must be filed in the amount set for your licence classification and anticipated annual gross volume — the amount is not a single flat figure, so check the ROC bond schedule for your classification before applying.

A Statutes and Rules Exam (SRE) covering business and law – 80 questions over 180 minutes, delivered online by GMetrix ($61) – plus a class-specific trade exam administered by PSI ($66). Both require a 70% score to pass.
What is on the Arizona SRE exam?
ARS Title 32 Chapter 10, the ROC administrative rules in the Arizona Administrative Code, lien law (ARS Title 33, Chapter 7), and contractor business practices. Passing results stay valid for two years.
