A C-57 Well Drilling license authorizes installing and repairing water wells and pumps — boring, drilling, casing, and cementing to deliver uncontaminated water — under 16 CCR §832.57, and it’s one of the few classifications where the trade is legally reserved even from an A-licensed general engineering contractor. Read the complete C-57 exam guide for requirements and exam structure.

Beyond the CSLB license itself, well drilling is separately governed by the California Department of Water Resources’ well construction standards (Bulletins 74-81 and 74-90) — a distinct legal requirement layered on top of the C-57 classification, since a well that delivers clean water and a fully plumbed water system rarely overlap in scope but are commonly confused by first-time applicants.
