Louisiana’s plumbing examinations are structured in parts, and the master paper in particular is larger than a single count suggests.
Figures below are compiled from state board and exam-provider sources. Where a board does not publish a count we say so rather than estimate. Confirm against the current candidate bulletin for your exam before you register.
Master plumbing is three exams in one
The Louisiana State Plumbing Board runs the master examination as 150 questions across three parts:
- Part I – 80 questions on the IPC and IRC
- Part II – 30 questions on Louisiana Title 51 (the state sanitary code)
- Part III – 40 questions of NASCLA business and law
That third part is the one candidates neglect. It is a quarter of the exam and it has nothing to do with plumbing. A capable tradesperson who prepares only the code content is leaving 40 questions unprepared.
Part II matters too: Title 51 is Louisiana-specific sanitary code, so national plumbing study material will not cover it.
Journeyman plumbing
The Journeyman Plumber examination is a written Part One paper of 80 questions, per the State Plumbing Board candidate bulletin.
Commercial general building uses NASCLA
For commercial general building work Louisiana accepts the NASCLA Accredited Examination: 115 scored questions, 330 minutes, open book. Because it is recognised across a group of states, one pass can support applications elsewhere.
A note on Business and Law
The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors requires a Business and Law examination, but does not publish an exact question count in sources we could reach. Our preparation is sized to the common 50-question format used by comparable state business papers, and we have recorded that as an inference rather than a published figure.
