How to get licensed in Maine
- Meet the experience requirement. Each classification requires documented on-the-job hours (and, for senior licenses, time as a licensed journeyman). A registered apprenticeship is a common path.

Does Maine license general contractors?
No. Maine has no state general contractor license – general contractors, roofers, siding installers, and painters need no state license. The skilled trades are licensed by examination.
Which Maine trades require an exam?
Electricians (through the Electricians Examining Board within OPOR) and plumbers. Oil-burner, solid-fuel, and propane/natural-gas technicians are licensed separately by the Maine Fuel Board.
What are the Maine passing scores?
Electrician journeyman: 80 questions at 70%; master electrician: 100 questions at 75%. Plumbing exams require 70%, except the master plumber exam at 75%.
