Mississippi keeps its contractor examination structure simple: a Law and Business Management paper, plus the NASCLA accredited examination for commercial general building work.
Law and Business Management
The State Board of Contractors requires a 50-question Law and Business Management examination, two hours, open book, drawn from the NASCLA Contractor’s Guide to Business, Law and Project Management.
It is short, which is exactly why it gets neglected. It covers lien law, contracts, tax and payroll obligations, insurance and bonding, estimating and project management, and a capable builder who has never run the business side can fail it comfortably.
Commercial general building uses NASCLA
The NASCLA Accredited Commercial General Building Contractor examination presents 125 questions of which 115 are scored, over 330 minutes, open book, requiring 70 percent. The unscored ten are pretest items and are not identified, so answer everything as though it counts while remembering your target is measured against the 115.
Because NASCLA is recognised across a group of states, passing it in Mississippi can support applications elsewhere.
