How to get licensed in Mississippi
Mississippi licenses through the State Board of Contractors (MSBOC). Two things decide your path: the dollar value of the work, and whether you want a major classification or a set of specialties.
- The $50,000 line decides whether you need a licence at all. Commercial contractors — general and subcontractors alike — performing work over $50,000 require a commercial licence. A residential builder performing new residential construction over $50,000 requires a residential builder licence.
- Meet the net worth threshold. Applicants for a major classification must demonstrate a net worth of at least $50,000. All other applicants must demonstrate a net worth of at least $20,000.
- Get the right kind of financial statement — a compilation will be rejected. Submit a reviewed or audited financial statement prepared by a CPA in accordance with AICPA standards and completed within the last twelve months, reflecting assets, liabilities and net worth. The Board explicitly does not accept a compilation, which is the single most common application error.
- Choose major or specialty deliberately. Holding a major classification entitles you to perform all of the specialty classifications listed within that major category. An applicant who does not want a major classification may instead choose an unlimited number of specialty classifications — so the decision is about scope and cost, not about how many trades you may hold.
- Everyone sits Law and Business Management. All applicants take the Law and Business Management examination. In addition, applicants must take a trade examination where one is required for the classification sought.

A Mississippi Business and Law exam (50 questions, 120 minutes – you must answer 35 correctly, a 70%) plus a trade exam. For commercial and residential general contractors, the NASCLA Accredited Examination serves as the trade exam.
