New Hampshire Contractor License Exams (2026): A 126-Question Master Electrician Paper

New Hampshire licenses through the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification with Prov administering the examinations. The master electrician paper is one of the longest in New England.

Figures below are compiled from state board and exam-provider sources. Where a board does not publish a count we say so rather than estimate. Confirm against the current candidate bulletin for your exam before you register.

The exams

ExaminationQuestionsTimePass
Master Electrician126––
Journeyman Electricianaround 110~4.5 hours70%
Journeyman Plumberat least 1003 hours70%
Master Plumber1003 hours70%

All open book. Electrical is referenced to the 2023 NEC as adopted by New Hampshire; plumbing to the IPC.

Where our figures are firm and where they are not

The 126-question master electrician count comes from the current Prov candidate information bulletin and is firm.

The journeyman electrician figure is not. It derives from study material rather than a bulletin, and the description of it as roughly 110 questions split about evenly between NEC and practical installation does not reconcile cleanly. We would rather flag that than present it as settled, so confirm with Prov before planning around a specific length.

The journeyman plumbing bulletin states “at least 100 questions”, which is a floor rather than an exact count.

Three hours is tight for a hundred questions

The plumbing papers give under two minutes per question on an open-book exam. That is the tightest pacing of the New Hampshire set, so tab by task rather than by chapter.

Before you register

  1. Confirm the question count and time limit on the current bulletin.
  2. Confirm the code edition; it is pinned and a newer edition is not a substitute.
  3. Confirm whether a separate business and law paper is required.
