North Dakota Contractor License Exams (2026): Hybrid and Four-Part Formats

Neither of North Dakota’s trade examinations is a straightforward single-format paper. Both mix conditions within one sitting.

Figures below are compiled from state board and exam-provider sources. Where a board does not publish a count we say so rather than estimate. Confirm against the current candidate bulletin for your exam before you register.

Electrical is a hybrid format

The State Electrical Board runs its journeyman and master examinations in a hybrid open and closed book format. Part of the sitting allows the NEC; part does not.

That is unusual and it changes preparation. Tabbing alone will not carry you, because the closed portion tests recall. Nor will memorisation alone, because the open portion rewards fast lookup. You need both, and you need to know which topics fall on which side, so check the current board information before you build a plan around either approach.

Plumbing runs four parts over five hours

The State Plumbing Board’s examination is not one paper:

  • Part 1 – closed book, 100 multiple-choice questions
  • Parts 2 to 4 – open book completion exercises: 40 completion questions, a water-pipe-sizing exercise, and a drain, waste and vent exercise with fixture units

Five hours total. The multiple-choice block is the only part a question bank can represent; the completion exercises require worked practice with sizing tables and fixture-unit calculations.

The exam is also based on the 2018 North Dakota Plumbing Code, a state-custom code rather than the UPC. Do not cross-reference UPC numbering when you study.

North Dakota exam prep

Our North Dakota plumbing preparation covers the Part 1 multiple-choice block. The completion exercises are not multiple-choice modelable, so budget separate practice for those.

Before you register

  1. Confirm the question count and time limit on the current bulletin.
  2. Confirm the code edition; it is pinned and a newer edition is not a substitute.
  3. Confirm whether a separate business and law paper is required.
