Plumbing Contractor License Exam Prep — All States
Preparing for a plumbing contractor or plumber license exam? Contractor Pathway builds an original, exam-focused study guide plus four full-length practice exams for plumbing classifications across the country — from state-issued Journeyman and Master Plumber licenses to California’s C-36 Plumbing Contractor classification. Every course is matched to the license your state actually tests, with 30-, 60-, and 90-day access at $99, $129, and $169.
Plumbing licensing varies a lot by state
There is no single “plumbing exam” — every state licensing board sets its own tiers (Apprentice/Tradesman, Journeyman, Master, Contractor), its own adopted plumbing and fuel-gas code (commonly a version of the Uniform Plumbing Code or International Plumbing Code, with the edition and any local amendments set by each state), its own exam vendor, and its own experience and continuing-education requirements. Some states, like South Dakota, use a different tier structure entirely (Plumber and Plumbing Contractor, with no separate Journeyman/Master distinction) — check your course description for the exact license it targets. Always confirm the current code edition, exam vendor, question count, and passing score with your own state board or testing vendor before you schedule — Contractor Pathway is an independent exam-prep provider and is not affiliated with any state board or testing vendor.
What every plumbing course includes
Each course below includes a comprehensive study guide (code-section breakdowns, worked calculations, common exam traps, a glossary, and a 30/60/90-day study plan) plus four full-length practice exams matched to the topic weighting of that state’s actual test, with a detailed answer explanation for every question.
Choose your state and license level
Courses are grouped below by state. If your state licenses more than one plumbing tier (for example, Journeyman and Master), choose the exam you’re actually sitting for.
No. States adopt either a version of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) or the International Plumbing Code (IPC), plus their own fuel-gas code and local amendments — and the adopted edition changes over time. Confirm the exact code edition your state is testing before you study; our guides state the edition each course is built against.
What’s the difference between Journeyman and Master Plumber?
A Journeyman license generally lets you perform plumbing work after completing an apprenticeship or logging required hours; a Master license (often required to hold a contractor license or pull permits) typically requires additional years of licensed journeyman experience plus a separate, harder exam. Not every state uses this two-tier structure — some use different titles, such as Plumber and Plumbing Contractor.
Are plumbing exams open book?
In most states, yes — you’re typically allowed a clean, tabbed copy of the adopted plumbing code during the exam. That’s why our guides teach you exactly what to tab and how to find a section quickly, since speed at locating the right code section is often the difference between passing and re-testing.
How long should I study?
Most candidates do well on a 30-, 60-, or 90-day plan depending on their experience — which is why we offer access at all three terms ($99 / $129 / $169). Each guide includes a day-by-day study plan for whichever term you choose.
I don’t see my state listed — what should I do?
We’re continuing to build out plumbing coverage nationwide. If your state isn’t listed above, check our full state directory or Business & Law exam prep, which is half off with any trade-classification purchase.
