What is actually on the B exam
CSLB divides the General Building (B) examination into five sections. These weightings are the Board’s own, taken from the study guide it publishes for this classification — they are not our estimate:
| Section | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Planning and Estimating | 15% |
| Framing and Structural Components | 20% |
| Core Trades | 30% |
| Finish Trades | 20% |
| Safety | 15% |
The B examination is closed book — no reference materials may be used during the test. Questions are multiple choice with four options, and there is no penalty for guessing, so leave nothing blank.
This is only half of what you sit. Every applicant also passes the separate Law and Business examination, which is not part of the B paper and is weighted on its own outline. Budget preparation time for both.
