Iowa Master Plumber licensing, explained

About the Iowa Master Plumber license

Iowa licenses plumbers through the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board, housed within the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). The Master Plumber with Gas license is the credential this course is written for. Kirkwood's state-disciplines page does not print the experience path that qualifies you to sit the master exam, so this guide does not invent one and does not borrow the journeyperson apprenticeship sentence and call it the master path. Confirm the path on the Board's current statute before you apply.

Your exam is built on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) as adopted by Iowa — currently the 2024 UPC (641 Iowa Administrative Code 25.1(105)); always confirm the exact edition on the current candidate bulletin, since the exam is written to the adopted edition, not necessarily the newest. The two model codes — the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) published by IAPMO and the International Plumbing Code (IPC) published by the ICC — agree on the physics but differ in tables, fixture-unit values, and some sizing methods, so always work from the one your state adopted.

Know these scope facts cold: the license is held by the individual; most work requires a permit and inspection (rough-in/top-out and final); you must work within the classification you hold; and unlicensed or out-of-scope plumbing work is a violation that can cost you the license and carry penalties. Plumbing protects public health — the exam constantly returns to the two core purposes of the code: deliver safe potable water and remove waste without contaminating that water.

How Iowa licensing works

  • Experience: Kirkwood's page does not print an hour total or an apprenticeship length for the master license. Do not study a journeyperson apprenticeship sentence as if it were this application. Read the Board's current statute when you apply.
  • Exam: Kirkwood's master plumber with gas paper is 125 questions, 6 hours, open book, and 75 percent or above. The exam fee is 119 dollars, not refundable and not transferable. Books are the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code and the Iowa State Plumbing Code 2024 amendment booklet.
  • What this guide does not print: a Board application price, a license term, or a continuing-education hour total. The Kirkwood page does not print them.

This is the opening of the full study guide. The complete guide continues into code navigation, worked calculations and solved exam questions.
