Louisiana Commercial General Building Contractor (NASCLA) licensing, explained

About the Louisiana Commercial General Building Contractor license

Louisiana licenses general contractors through the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors. This course is the NASCLA commercial general building examination. It is not an LSLBC heavy-construction classification and it is not the Louisiana Business and Law portal course. A general contractor enters into the prime contract, pulls the building permit, and is responsible for the whole project — scheduling and coordinating the subcontractors and trades, means and methods, jobsite safety, and delivering work that passes inspection and meets the contract.

Code questions are based only on the editions the PSI bulletin lists. The July 7, 2026 list allows the International Building Code, 2021 or 2024. A parish field adoption can be a different book. Do not swap them. Know these scope facts cold: the license is held by the qualifying individual/entity; most work requires a permit and inspections at defined milestones (footing, foundation, framing, rough trades, insulation, final); you must work within the classification and monetary limits you hold; and unlicensed or out-of-scope contracting is a violation that can void contracts, forfeit the right to collect payment, and carry penalties.

How Louisiana licensing works

  • Experience: documented years running or supervising construction projects, usually verified by references or a qualifying party (a state requirement; the NASCLA exam itself has no experience prerequisite to sit).
  • Financial responsibility: Net-worth, bond, and insurance minimums are LSLBC application rules. The July 7, 2026 NASCLA bulletin does not print those dollar amounts. This guide does not invent them. Read the current LSLBC application before you rely on a figure from a third-party summary.
  • Application: file with NASCLA and wait for pre-approval before you pay PSI. You have one year from that approval and at most three attempts. License documents go to LSLBC, not to the testing center.
  • Exam format and vendor: delivered by PSI. PSI's bulletin updated July 7, 2026 prints 115 scored questions, a minimum passing score of 81, and 330 minutes. The examination is open book. NASCLA's participating-agency page lists the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors among the agencies that accept this examination. Acceptance is not a license. Ten non-scored pretest items are included in the 330 minutes. Practice banks stay at 115. LSLBC separately requires every applicant to satisfy its own Business and Law requirement — it is not part of the NASCLA exam and cannot be waived. Confirm the current Business and Law format and the NASCLA question counts, time limit, and cut score on the LSLBC site and the PSI candidate information bulletin before you register.
  • Renewal: continuing education, renewal dates, and bond rules are LSLBC license rules. This bulletin does not print them. Do not invent an hour total.
