Louisiana Journeyman Plumber licensing, explained

About the Louisiana Journeyman Plumber license

Louisiana licenses plumbers through the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana (SPBLA). The Journeyman Plumber license authorizes you to perform plumbing work, generally under the responsibility of a master plumber. You qualify with 7,000 hours as a currently enrolled indentured apprentice, or with 8,000 hours as an unindentured apprentice, and you pass both the written exam and the practical. Completion of a class without those hours is not the application rule.

The written exam, on the application, is based on the 2021 International Plumbing Code and the 2021 International Residential Code. Both are written-exam books. The practical hour is separate. The written books named on the application read October 10, 2026, are the 2021 International Plumbing Code and the 2021 International Residential Code. The uniform plumbing code is not on that list. Its fixture-unit tables are not the key for this paper.

Know these scope facts cold: the license is held by the individual; most work requires a permit and inspection (rough-in/top-out and final); you must work within the classification you hold; and unlicensed or out-of-scope plumbing work is a violation that can cost you the license and carry penalties. Plumbing protects public health — the exam constantly returns to the two core purposes of the code: deliver safe potable water and remove waste without contaminating that water.

How Louisiana licensing works

  • Experience: The application requires 7,000 hours for a currently enrolled indentured apprentice who is also registered with the board, or 8,000 hours for a currently registered unindentured apprentice. The hours are manual labor of plumbing under the direct, constant, on-the-job supervision of a journeyman or master plumber licensed by the board. The master license is a different application.
  • Education: approved instruction hours or completion of an approved apprenticeship program.
  • Application: submit the application, fees, and proof of experience (often signed off by a master plumber or employer) before you are approved to sit.
  • Exam format: The State Plumbing Board of Louisiana holds this examination in Baton Rouge and Shreveport. The application prints an 80-question, 3-hour open-book written part on the 2021 IPC and the 2021 IRC, plus a separate 1-hour practical. These practice exams are the written part only. The application requires 70 percent on each examination category. Seventy percent of 80 is 56. The master exam is a different three-part written paper and is not this course.
  • Renewal: renew before December 31. The application and the licenses page say each journeyman takes continuing education each year through an approved provider. That journeyman section does not print the hour total, so this guide does not invent one.

This is the opening of the full study guide. The complete guide continues into code navigation, worked calculations and solved exam questions.
