Maine Journeyman Plumber licensing, explained

About the Maine Journeyman Plumber license

Maine licenses plumbers through the Maine Plumbers' Examining Board. The Journeyman Plumber license authorizes you to perform plumbing work, generally under the responsibility of a master plumber. You earn it by meeting the experience-and-education requirement — documented on-the-job hours plus approved instruction, or completion of an approved apprenticeship — and passing the trade exam.

Your exam is built on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) — specifically the IAPMO 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code adopted by Maine (confirm the exact edition on the bulletin — the exam is written to the adopted edition, not necessarily the newest). The two model codes — the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) published by IAPMO and the International Plumbing Code (IPC) published by the ICC — agree on the physics but differ in tables, fixture-unit values, and some sizing methods, so always work from the one your state adopted.

Know these scope facts cold: the license is held by the individual; most work requires a permit and inspection (rough-in/top-out and final); you must work within the classification you hold; and unlicensed or out-of-scope plumbing work is a violation that can cost you the license and carry penalties. Plumbing protects public health — the exam constantly returns to the two core purposes of the code: deliver safe potable water and remove waste without contaminating that water.

How Maine licensing works

  • Experience: the journeyman-in-training path requires 2,000 hours of supervised work as a licensed journeyman-in-training (after one year of instruction at a board-approved technical/community college, a two-year secondary career-and-technical-education program, or a registered Department of Labor apprenticeship), completed within four years of that license. The trainee path requires 4,000 hours over at least two years under a licensed master plumber. The master examination is a different paper. The Board's license page requires at least one year with 2,000 hours as a licensed journeyman, or at least four years with 8,000 hours as a licensed trainee under a master. It does not say two years after the journeyman card.
  • Education: one year of instruction at a board-approved technical or community college, a two-year secondary CTE program, or a registered apprenticeship — one of these is required before you can hold a journeyman-in-training license.
  • Application: submit the application, fees, and proof of experience (often an affidavit from your supervising master plumber) — you must be approved by the Board before you can schedule the exam.
  • Exam vendor: PROV, Inc. The journeyman exam is closed book, 80 questions, with a 3-hour time limit and a 70 percent passing score — confirm these on the current candidate information bulletin, since fees and format can change.
  • Renewal: licenses renew every two years from your original licensure date ($200 renewal fee for journeyman/master, $100 for trainee, plus late fees if you miss the deadline). Maine currently has no continuing-education requirement for renewal — confirm this hasn't changed before you rely on it.
