Michigan Master Plumber licensing, explained

About the Michigan Master Plumber license

Michigan licenses plumbers through the State Plumbing Board, administered by LARA's Bureau of Construction Codes (Verified against MCL 339.6105, Michigan Skilled Trades Regulation Act, 2016 PA 407, on 2026-07-25). The Master Plumber is the senior plumbing credential. It generally requires you to first hold a journeyman plumber license, accumulate additional documented experience as a licensed journeyman, and pass the master exam. MCL 339.6113 requires at least 18 years of age, a journey plumber license, and 4,000 hours as a journey plumber over not less than 2 years immediately before the application. The plumbing contractor paper is a separate 50-question, 120-minute, 75 percent sitting. It is not this exam. A master may design plumbing systems, pull permits, supervise journeymen and apprentices, and serve as the qualifying individual for a licensed plumbing contractor.

Your exam is built on the International Plumbing Code (IPC) as adopted and amended by Michigan — the 2021 Michigan Plumbing Code (2021 IPC with Michigan amendments), effective March 12, 2024 (Verified against the Michigan LARA Bureau of Construction Codes on 2026-07-15). Confirm the current edition on the bulletin, since the exam is written to the adopted edition. The two model codes — the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) published by IAPMO and the International Plumbing Code (IPC) published by the ICC — agree on the physics but differ in tables, fixture-unit values, and some sizing methods, so always work from the one your state adopted.

Know these scope facts cold: the license is held by the individual; most work requires a permit and inspection (rough-in/top-out and final); you must work within the classification you hold; and unlicensed or out-of-scope plumbing work is a violation that can cost you the license and carry penalties. Plumbing protects public health — the exam constantly returns to the two core purposes of the code: deliver safe potable water and remove waste without contaminating that water.

How Michigan licensing works

  • Experience: at least 6,000 hours over not less than 3 years as a registered apprentice plumber to qualify for the journey plumber license, then at least 4,000 hours over not less than 2 years as a licensed journey plumber to qualify to sit for the master exam (Verified against MCL 339.6113 and 339.6115 on 2026-07-25).
  • Education: approved instruction hours or completion of an approved apprenticeship program.
  • Application: submit the application, fees, and proof of experience (often signed off by a master plumber or employer) before you are approved to sit.
  • Exam vendor: PSI. The Michigan Master Plumber exam is 130 questions, open book, 180 minutes (3 hours), with a 70% passing score (Verified against Michigan LARA / PSI exam-preparation sources on 2026-07-25 — always confirm the current cut score, question count, and time limit directly on the PSI candidate information bulletin before you test).
  • Renewal: the master plumber license renews on a set cycle with a license fee; after any adoption of a new or updated Michigan Plumbing Code, a licensee must complete a board-approved code-update course within 12 months to keep the license in good standing (Verified against MCL 339.6113 on 2026-07-25).
