Montana Journeyman Plumber licensing, explained

About the Montana Journeyman Plumber license

Montana licenses plumbers through the Montana Board of Plumbers in the Department of Labor and Industry. The Journeyman Plumber license is the working plumber's license; the Master Plumber license is a separate license with its own 125-question written exam. You earn the journeyman license by meeting the board's experience requirement and by passing the board's examinations. Under ARM 24.180.407(2), that now means two written examinations at 70 percent or better on each, with the first passed before the second. The experience, application, and scope rules sit in the Statutes and Rules Relating to the Board of Plumbers and Building Codes, which is also half of the exam's stated content, so read them in the packet rather than from a summary.

Your exam is built on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), published by IAPMO, in the 2021 edition as amended in Montana. The International Plumbing Code (IPC), published by the ICC, is a different model code. It is not the code on this exam, and its tables, fixture-unit values, slopes, cleanout rules, and clearances differ from the UPC in ways the exam tests. Much of the free study material online is written to the IPC. When a number you remember does not match the 2021 UPC page in front of you, the page wins.

Plumbing protects public health. The exam returns again and again to the two core purposes of the code: deliver safe potable water in enough quantity and pressure, and remove waste without contaminating that water or letting sewer gas into the building. When two answers both look plausible, the one that better protects the potable supply or the trap seal is usually the code answer.

This is the opening of the full study guide. The complete guide continues into code navigation, worked calculations and solved exam questions.
