Ohio Electrical Contractor licensing, explained

About the Ohio Electrical license

Ohio issues the state Electrical Contractor license through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB), part of the Ohio Department of Commerce. State licensing applies to commercial electrical work: the license authorizes a business to bid and perform commercial electrical contracting anywhere in Ohio. Ohio does not issue statewide master- or journeyman-electrician credentials — those are licensed locally by some municipalities, so check the city or county where you plan to work. You qualify for the state license by having five years of experience in the electrical trade as an employee (or by being a registered engineer in Ohio with three years of business experience in the electrical construction trade), carrying the required liability insurance, and passing two exams — the electrical trade exam and the Ohio business-and-law exam.

The exam is National Electrical Code (NEC) based, because Ohio adopts the NEC as its electrical code. It is open book: you may bring bound copies of the approved references (the NEC and permitted handbooks named in the PSI bulletin). Tabs and highlighting added in advance are generally permitted, but you may not write in your references during the exam — Ohio confiscates materials from candidates caught doing so — and loose or handwritten notes are not allowed. Confirm the current reference list and rules with PSI. Plan to tab and index your code book before test day, because the exam is as much a test of how fast you can locate a section as it is of what you have memorized.

Know these scope facts cold, because the exam asks them in plain-language form: the license is held by an individual (the qualifier), and the business operates under that licensed person rather than under the company itself; most installations require a permit and inspection before concealment (rough-in) and again at final; you must work within the classification you hold; and performing electrical work without the required license, or beyond your scope, is a violation that can cost you the license and carry civil penalties.

This is the opening of the full study guide. The complete guide continues into code navigation, worked calculations and solved exam questions.
