Utah Master Electrician licensing, explained

About the Utah Master Electrician license

Utah licenses electricians through the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), under the Electricians Licensing Board. The Master Electrician is the senior credential, reached through one of three documented pathways: (1) a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program plus 2,000 hours as a licensed apprentice electrician; (2) an Associate Degree in Applied Science plus 4,000 hours as a licensed journeyman electrician; or (3) no qualifying degree plus 8,000 hours as a licensed journeyman electrician. A holder at this level can typically pull permits, supervise journeymen and apprentices, design installations, and serve as the qualifying individual for a licensed contracting business.

Effective August 1, 2025, Master Electrician candidates no longer sit separate Theory and Code exams. Instead they take a single Master Law and Rules exam — 80 questions, 240 minutes — administered by Prov (Prov administers this exam). The exam draws on the National Electrical Code (Utah's currently referenced edition is NEC 2023, per the Prov candidate bulletin), NFPA 70E (workplace electrical safety), and a substantial block of Utah-specific law: the Construction Trades Licensing Act, the DOPL Licensing Act, the Electricians Licensing Act Administrative Rule, the Utah Labor Code, and Utah's NEC amendments. It is open book against the specific reference list published with the exam — not just the code book — The June 24, 2026 reference list is the one this guide uses when it names a book. If you already passed the hands-on Utah Electrician Practical exam as a Journeyman, you do not have to retake it for the Master license; if you have not, you must pass it separately. Plan to tab and index your reference materials before test day, because the exam is as much a test of how fast you can locate a section as it is of what you have memorized.

Know these scope facts cold, because the exam asks them in plain-language form: the license is held by the individual, not the company; most installations require a permit and inspection before concealment (rough-in) and again at final; you must work within the classification you hold; and performing electrical work without the required license, or beyond your scope, is a violation that can cost you the license and carry civil penalties.

How Utah licensing works

  • Experience: one of the three degree-plus-hours pathways in Section 1 (2,000 apprentice hours with an EE degree, 4,000 journeyman hours with an associate degree, or 8,000 journeyman hours with no qualifying degree).
  • Education: an EAC/ABET-accredited Electrical Engineering degree or an Associate Degree in Applied Science reduces the required hours but does not eliminate the hands-on experience requirement — see Section 1.
  • Application: submit the application, fees, and proof of experience (often signed off by a supervising/master electrician or employer) to the board before you are approved to sit.
  • Exam vendor: Prov. Master Law and Rules is 80 questions, 240 minutes, 75 percent. The FAQ prints $85 for each combined Theory and Code exam, and the categories paragraph also prints $85 for the code and theory exams. The practical fee is printed as $25 per section in the FAQ and as $85 in the categories paragraph. This guide does not pick one practical price.
  • Renewal: licenses renew on a fixed cycle and usually require continuing education, including code-update hours each time a new NEC edition is adopted.

Before you rely on any value in this guide, NEC 2023, the edition named on the June 24, 2026 bulletin on the DOPL and Prov bulletin. Ampacities, GFCI/AFCI scope, working-clearance distances, and receptacle-spacing rules all change between editions, and the exam is written to the edition your state has adopted — not necessarily the newest one published.

This is the opening of the full study guide. The complete guide continues into code navigation, worked calculations and solved exam questions.
