Utah S350 General Mechanical (HVAC) Contractor licensing, explained

About the Utah S350 Mechanical license

Utah licenses mechanical (HVAC/R) tradespeople through the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DPL). The S350 Mechanical is a senior mechanical credential. It generally requires documented journeyman-level experience, and the exam adds system design, load and duct sizing, code administration, and often a business-and-law portion. A holder may design and install mechanical systems, pull permits, supervise journeymen and apprentices, and serve as the qualifying individual for a licensed mechanical contractor.

This exam's mechanical book is the 2024 IMC plus the Utah amendments packet the handbook dates 2015, and the fuel-gas book is the 2024 IFGC plus the 2015 Utah fuel-gas amendments packet. The handbook does not list the UMC. EPA 608 is not a named reference on this list. Do not swap in a model code the list does not name.

Know these scope facts cold: the license is held by the individual; most work requires a permit and inspection (rough-in and final); you must work within the classification you hold; and unlicensed or out-of-scope work is a violation that can cost the license and carry penalties. The mechanical code exists to deliver safe combustion and venting, adequate ventilation, and safe refrigeration — the exam keeps returning to those safety purposes.

How Utah licensing works

  • Experience: documented field hours (apprentice and journeyman); senior licenses require journeyman time on top of the base requirement.
  • Registered technician: a separate, lower registration for those working under a contractor — generally two years of supervised ACR work and a department-approved certification program (about 2,000 hours of combined instruction and practical experience).
  • EPA certification: handling refrigerant requires federal EPA Section 608 certification (Type I, II, III, or Universal) — separate from the state license but often expected.
  • Application: submit the application, fees, and proof of experience before you are approved to sit.
  • Exam vendor: Prov (provexam.com) — Utah DOPL’s HVAC exam administrator Prov (not PSI/Prometric). The passing score is generally 70 percent — check the current cut score, question count, and time limit on the bulletin. The exam includes Utah ACR laws and rules alongside the trade topics.
  • Renewal: licenses renew on a fixed cycle and usually require continuing education, including code-update hours.
