West Virginia Journeyman Electrician licensing, explained

About the West Virginia Journeyman Electrician license

West Virginia licenses electricians through the Office of the State Fire Marshal (WVSFMO), Regulatory and Licensing Division, under WV Code Chapter 29, Article 3B. By statute, a Journeyman Electrician may install wiring, conduits, apparatus, equipment, fixtures, and other electrical appliances, but may not design electrical systems — that authority belongs to a Master Electrician. In practice, journeymen typically work for a licensed electrical contractor or under a master electrician's oversight. You earn the journeyman license by meeting the experience-and-education requirement — a combination of documented on-the-job hours and approved classroom instruction, or completion of a registered apprenticeship — and passing the trade exam.

The exam is National Electrical Code (NEC) based, because West Virginia adopts the NEC as its electrical code. It is normally open book: you may bring a clean, bound copy of the adopted NEC edition. Tabs and highlighting are usually permitted; loose or handwritten notes usually are not — confirm the current rule with the vendor. Plan to tab and index your code book before test day, because the exam is as much a test of how fast you can locate a section as it is of what you have memorized.

Know these scope facts cold, because the exam asks them in plain-language form: the license is held by the individual, not the company; most installations require a permit and inspection before concealment (rough-in) and again at final; you must work within the classification you hold; and performing electrical work without the required license, or beyond your scope, is a violation that can cost you the license and carry civil penalties.

How West Virginia licensing works

  • Experience: documented hours in the trade (apprentice and journeyman time), with the senior license requiring journeyman time on top of the base requirement.
  • Education: approved instruction hours or completion of an approved apprenticeship program count toward the journeyman experience that underlies the master credential.
  • Application: submit the application, fees, and proof of experience (often signed off by a supervising/master electrician or employer) to the board before you are approved to sit.
  • Exam vendor: PSI. The passing score is commonly 70 percent — confirm the current cut score, question count, and time limit on the candidate information bulletin.
  • Renewal: WV electrician licenses (Journeyman, Master, and Specialty) expire annually on June 30, with a $50 annual renewal fee. The State Fire Marshal does not currently require continuing-education hours to renew — confirm this hasn't changed before you rely on it.

Before you rely on any value in this guide, confirm the currently adopted NEC edition with the State Fire Marshal's Regulatory and Licensing Division (West Virginia electrician licensing is administered by the WVSFMO, not PSI). As of January 1, 2026, West Virginia's Master, Journeyman, and Single-Family Dwelling electrician exams are based on the 2023 NEC, per the State Fire Marshal's Regulatory and Licensing Division. Ampacities, GFCI/AFCI scope, working-clearance distances, and receptacle-spacing rules all change between editions, and the exam is written to the edition your state has adopted — not necessarily the newest one published.

This is the opening of the full study guide. The complete guide continues into code navigation, worked calculations and solved exam questions.
