South Dakota’s electrical examinations are documented in detail. Its plumbing examinations are not, and we would rather be straightforward about that than fill the gap with a guess.
Electrical, from the ICC bulletin
| Examination | Questions | Referenced to |
|---|---|---|
| Journeyman Electrician (ICC 531) | 80 | NFPA 70 (2023) |
| Electrical Contractor (ICC 530) | 100 | NFPA 70 (2023) |
| Class B Electrician (ICC 533) | 60 | NFPA 70 (2023) |
Ugly’s Electrical References is permitted in any edition. Note that South Dakota issues an Electrical Contractor license rather than one titled Master Electrician, which matters when you are searching for study material.
Plumbing: no published count
The South Dakota State Plumbing Commission does not publish question counts for its journeyman or master plumbing examinations. We checked the Commission’s own exam page, the ICC South Dakota bulletin (which covers the electrical exams only) and four independent vendor sources. Every one of them refers you back to calling the Commission.
What is established: the exams are open book, references may be tabbed and highlighted, and the pass mark is 70 percent. Sources disagree on whether the code is the IPC or the UPC.
Our South Dakota plumbing practice exams are built to a length inferred from neighbouring states that do publish figures, and we have recorded that as an inference rather than a fact. If exact length matters to your preparation, confirm it with the Commission at (605) 773-3429.
