Vermont Contractor License Exams (2026): Electrical and Plumbing by the Numbers

Vermont licenses electricians and plumbers through the Department of Public Safety Division of Fire Safety, with Prov administering the examinations. The figures below come from the Division’s own candidate information bulletin.

Vermont uses unusual lengths

Most states settle on round numbers. Vermont does not: 82 questions for the journeyman plumber and 102 for the master are oddly specific, and that specificity matters when you are calculating a pass mark. Seventy percent of 82 is 58 correct answers, not 57, and rounding the wrong way in your practice targets means training to a standard just below the real one.

The master step adds roughly twenty questions

Both trades step up by about the same margin: electrical from 90 to 105, plumbing from 82 to 102. That is a smaller jump than several neighbouring states, where master papers run 50 percent longer than journeyman. It does not mean the master exam is easier, only that the additional demand shows up as scope rather than volume.

Because the papers are close in length, candidates sometimes assume the master exam is the journeyman exam with harder questions. Plan instead for broader coverage, particularly on system design and code administration.

Before you register

  1. Confirm the question count and time limit on the current bulletin for your specific exam.
  2. Confirm the code edition named. It is pinned, and a newer edition is not a substitute.
  3. Confirm whether a separate business and law paper or a practical portion is required.
