How to get licensed in West Virginia

West Virginia licenses through the Contractor Licensing Board, part of the Division of Labor, under W. Va. Code § 30-42. Examinations are delivered by Prov. One rule here catches people out, so it is worth reading before you test.

1. Confirm your classification first. West Virginia licenses by scope of work, and the Board asks you to confirm which classification and which examinations apply to what you actually do before you apply. Getting this wrong means sitting the wrong paper.
2. The person who tests must be the right person. Whoever sits the examination must be an officer, member, owner, or full-time employee of the business — and payroll records are required as proof of full-time employment. You cannot send someone unconnected to the company to take it for you.
3. Exam scores never expire — but they run out. This is the rule worth knowing: a passing score does not expire, but it can only be used a maximum of three times — once as a full-time employee, and up to twice more as a member of Responsible Management (CEO, CFO, corporate officer, director, manager, member, partner or owner). A score is a finite asset, not an open ticket.
4. Schedule through Prov. Examinations are booked with Prov, Inc. once the Board has processed your application.
5. Carry the right coverage. Contractors with employees in West Virginia must provide workers’ compensation insurance and unemployment documentation, and verification of coverage must be received before a renewal will be processed. The Board may separately require financial assurance — a surety bond, cash bond, certificate of deposit, irrevocable letter of credit or performance insurance — from a contractor found in violation.
