Wyoming’s electrical licensing runs through the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety, with ICC administering the examinations. The figures below come from the ICC Wyoming Electrical Contractor and Trades Examination Information Bulletin.
The exams
| Examination | Questions | Time | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journeyman Electrician | 80 | 240 minutes | – |
| Master Electrician | 100 | 300 minutes | 70% |
Both are open book and computer-based, referenced to the NEC.
Four and five hours is a stamina problem
Wyoming allows unusually generous time: three minutes per question on the journeyman paper and three on the master. That is not padding, it is an open-book exam where you are expected to look things up.
The practical consequence is that concentration decides some results. A candidate whose practice has consisted of half-hour sessions will find hour four considerably harder than hour one regardless of how well they know the code. Sit at least one full-length timed run before exam day.
Master adds twenty questions and an hour
The step from journeyman to master adds 20 questions and 60 minutes, keeping the per-question pacing identical. The difference is scope: the master paper reaches into advanced theory alongside business and law content, so it is not simply a longer version of the journeyman exam.

Before you register
- Confirm the question count and time limit on the current bulletin for your specific exam.
- Confirm the code edition named. It is pinned, and a newer edition is not a substitute.
- Confirm whether a separate business and law paper or a practical portion is required.
