How to get licensed in Wyoming

Wyoming licenses electricians statewide through the Electrical Board at the State Fire Marshal’s Office (Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety). General contractor licensing, by contrast, is handled at city and county level — there is no statewide general contractor licence.

1. Journeyman electrician: a four-year, 8,000-hour path. The journey-level route runs through a four-year apprenticeship combining paid field work with classroom training, accumulating 8,000 hours of electrical experience before the journey-level examination.
2. Master electrician: four years as a journeyman, plus schooling. Applicants must hold the journeyman licence for four years, complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training as a journeyman electrician, and complete four years (576 hours) of apprenticeship schooling from an approved Department of Labor school.
3. Register as an apprentice first. The Electrical Board registers apprentice electricians and apprentice technicians alongside licensing masters, journeymen, low voltage technicians and limited technicians. Registration is what makes your hours count — do it at the start, not at the end.
4. Continuing education: 16 hours, half of it code. Electricians must provide proof of 16 hours of continuing education units, of which eight hours must be from a code-related course, completed within the three-year period since the last licence renewal.
5. Check the local jurisdiction for general contracting. Because Wyoming has no statewide general contractor licence, the requirements for general building work — registration, bonding, exam — are set by the city or county where you intend to work. Confirm those before you bid.
